Spirit Airlines scraps plan to offer flights from Macon to Florida. What we know.
Spirit Airlines’ plans to offer flights from Macon to Fort Lauderdale have been halted before ever getting off the ground.
Macon-Bibb County, the Middle Georgia Regional Airport and Spirit excitedly announced direct flights from Macon to the Florida destination in July. But the airline declared bankruptcy after filing petitions for Chapter 11 in the Southern District of New York on Aug. 29. The bankruptcy filing will allow the airliner to carry on its business as it reorganizes its finances. As a result, the plan for services to Macon has been scrapped. Flights were supposed to start in October.
Spirit Airlines discontinued its services in multiple other locations in an effort to “transform (its) business and position Spirit for long-term success,” Thomas Fletcher, manager for media relations for Spirit Airlines, said Wednesday.
“We apologize to our Guests for any inconvenience this may cause and will reach out to those with affected reservations to notify them of their options, including a refund,” Fletcher said. “We are grateful to the airports, business partners and community members in these markets who welcomed and supported us.”
Spirit Airlines will also discontinue services in these cities, the company said:
- Albuquerque, New Mexico
- Birmingham, Alabama
- Boise, Idaho
- Chattanooga, Tennessee
- Columbia, South Carolina
- Oakland, California
- Portland, Oregon
- Sacramento, California
- Salt Lake City, Ohio
- San Diego, California
- San Jose, California
The airline “will continue to serve dozens of destinations throughout the U.S., Latin America and the Caribbean,” Fletcher said.
