A man died after being hit by an 18-wheeler in Macon, according to Bibb County officials.

The sheriff’s office was “ruling it as an accident,” Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones told The Telegraph.

Thomas Lucree, 39, was identified as the victim Monday afternoon, the sheriff’s office said.

The crash happened on Interstate 75 just after 11:50 p.m. Sunday, on the Northbound side, before the Bass Road exit ramp, the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

A 911 call initially reported a man walked into traffic on the interstate, according to the Bibb County Coroner’s Office.

Before deputies arrived, they got another call from a Garden City woman who drove the 18-wheeler north on I-75, the coroner’s office said. She told deputies that a man walked into her lane and “may have been struck,” the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies searched for the man for about 30 minutes, then found him “in a ditch” off of the interstate, the sheriff’s and coroner’s offices said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene around 1:30 a.m. by Deputy Coroner Richard Robinson, according to Jones and the sheriff’s office.

No charges were filed as of Monday afternoon. The crash was still under investigation. Anyone with information about the incident was asked to contact the sheriff’s office at 478-751-7500.
