A Norfolk Southern train traveling through the Fort Valley area was derailed Saturday during a flash flood, officials say.

Twenty-three train cars derailed shortly after 3 a.m., but none contained loaded hazardous materials. According to the Norfolk Southern company, there were no injuries and no danger to the public.

First responders from Peach County and Byron arrived on scene and observed the train wreck after receiving a call from Norfolk Southern just before 7 a.m.

The Peach County Sheriff’s Office said in a social media post that the incident was caused by the heavy rain they’ve had in recent days.

The sheriff’s office said that Powersville Road, between Hwy. 247 Connector and Hwy. 49, will only be open to local traffic for the next few days.

“We are sorry for the inconvenience but please (bear) with us while cleanup is underway,” the sheriff’s office said. “Please use an alternate route.”
