A Bibb County Jail inmate was found unresponsive and later died at Atrium Health hospital. Authorities are investigating the in-custody death.

A man held at the Bibb County Jail died overnight in custody, the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office announced Sunday morning.

The 38-year-old man was found unresponsive late Saturday night, the sheriff’s office said.

“Just before 12:00 a.m., corrections deputies were notified by inmates that a fellow inmate collapsed and was unresponsive in his cell,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

Jail medical staff tried to perform life-saving measures until emergency medical services arrived. The man was taken to Atrium Health hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The man was identified as Mario Marquiz Clark, according to the sheriff’s office. He was being held at the jail because he had a state court bench warrant, and was accused of violating probation, enticing a child for indecent purposes, and public indecency, according to the sheriff’s office.

“An autopsy will be performed due to this being an in-custody death,” the sheriff’s office said.
