A homeless man allegedly died by suicide on a train track in downtown Macon Saturday, according to the Bibb County coroner’s and sheriff’s offices.

Kenneth Kelly, 59, appeared to be struck by a train and was pronounced dead just after 1 p.m. Saturday, Coroner Leon Jones said.

Kelly lived at a large homeless encampment behind Burger King on the 800 block of Riverside Drive and Spring Street, Jones said.

The train that initially struck Kelly kept going and did not stop, according to Jones. Another train eventually stopped when it discovered his body.

“The train that stopped is not the one that hit him,” Jones said. “We know that much.”

Jones was unsure what time Kelly was struck by a train.

The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office made contact with the train conductor by Monday afternoon, according to Sgt. Christopher Williams.

No one was expected to face charges related to the incident and it was “being investigated as suicide,” Williams told The Telegraph.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation will perform an autopsy to confirm Kelly’s cause of death, Williams said.

The incident was still under investigation Monday afternoon.
