A 9-year-old girl on a bike was hit by an SUV in Byron Wednesday, according to the Byron Police Department.

Officers said they were dispatched to the collision around 5:30 p.m. on Murdock Lane in a quiet neighborhood next to a cemetery.

A 44-year-old Americus man drove an SUV while the girl was biking on the road, according to Capt. Bryan Hunter.

“It wasn’t a real high speed, but there was damage to both the bicycle and the SUV,” Hunter told The Telegraph.

The bicyclist was taken to a children’s hospital in Macon, where she was listed in critical condition, a news release from the police department said.

“I just know she’s not doing well at all,” Hunter said.

He does not expect the SUV driver to face charges.

The crash was still under investigation Thursday morning, which could take “a couple months” to complete, Hunter said.
