Coroner says multiple cars hit motorcyclist, fled in fatal Macon crash
Two vehicles fled after they allegedly were involved in a crash that killed a motorcyclist Tuesday morning in Macon, according to Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones.
Only one of three vehicles that hit the motorcyclist initially stayed at the scene, the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office told The Telegraph. The sheriff’s office said the other drivers eventually returned to the scene.
Deputies were dispatched to an accident around 2:50 a.m., just north of the North Avondale Circle intersection, a news release from the sheriff’s office said.
Deputies initially said the crash only involved a four-door Saab driver and motorcyclist Dana Wayne Redd, 55. Both were going north on Hawkinsville Road, deputies said. But Jones said it was more than that.
He told The Telegraph that Redd “got hit by three vehicles, but only one of them stopped.”
The sheriff’s office later clarified the Saab driver was the first to strike Redd, and remained on the scene, according to Deputy Alexis Mitchell-White, who works in BCSO’s public affairs office. The other two vehicles which struck him afterward “later returned to the scene and have been identified,” Mitchell told The Telegraph.
The Saab driver “could not make out the make or model of the two vehicles at the time of the incident,” Mitchell said.
A photo at the scene showed a black motorcycle crushed under the front passenger side bumper of the Saab, which had damage on its front hood.
Redd was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:20 p.m., about 30 minutes after the crash, Jones said. Redd’s family was notified of his death.
The collision shut down all traffic while deputies investigated the scene for about two hours on the Hawkinsville Road and South Avondale Circle intersection, a news release said.
An initial news reelase from the sheriff’s office said Redd was 60 years old, then corrected it a few hours later.
The fatal crash was still under investigation Tuesday morning.
Deputies urged anyone with related information to call the sheriff’s office and ask to speak with a fatality investigator at 478-751-7500.
