A man was shot by Monroe County deputies after they tried to serve him with multiple warrants, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday.

Deputies were attempting to serve John Monroe Barnes, 34, with multiple warrants at a CVS in Forsyth around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. Barnes allegedly opened fire on deputies and they fired back, shooting Barnes.

He was taken to a Macon hospital with “what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries,” the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was handling further investigation into the shooting, the sheriff’s office said.

Barnes was wanted in Clayton County for allegedly violating probation in a child molestation case, the sheriff’s office told The Telegraph. He also had a warrant in Henry County for allegedly failing to register as a sex offender and warrants in Monroe County for two counts of alleged terroristic threats.

The sheriff’s office said additional charges against him were pending after the incident.

The sheriff’s office didn’t immediately respond to questions about the officers involved.
