Update: Woman found dead in ‘deep well’ in Monroe County, sheriff’s office says.
The last conversation Shirley Obert had was with her husband before she died in a well, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
The 67-year-old woman was was reportedly trying to get help after she drove off-road and into a forest Saturday. Her body was found dead in a well nearby on Sunday, according to Anna Watkins, the sheriff’s office’s public information officer.
Obert first called her husband to tell him she was in an accident Saturday morning in a remote area near Abercrombie and Oxford roads in Monroe County, according to Watkins.
“He went to where she said she was, and could not find her,” Watkins told The Telegraph.
He called 911 and deputies were dispatched to the one-vehicle accident involving a Mazda Miata around 7 a.m. Saturday. Obert was the only person in the car.
“We do not know exactly what happened to make her car run off the road,” Watkins told The Telegraph. “She could have tried to avoid an animal, looked down for a minute, we just do not know.”
She was driving to work at Chick-fil-A at 600 West Lanier Avenue in Fayetteville, according to Watkins.
Investigators searched for Obert past dark Saturday evening, then resumed the search Sunday morning, when her body was found around 11:30 a.m.
“She was found deceased at the bottom of a deep well that was surrounded by very thick brush, near where her car was found,” Watkins said.
Local and state agencies responded to the incident including the sheriff’s office, Monroe County Fire Department, Forsyth Police Department, Macon-Bibb County Fire Department, Georgia State Patrol Aviation and Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
The Macon-Bibb County Fire Department used a crane to help tether Obert out of the well.
It appeared to be a “tragic accident,” the sheriff’s office said.
The incident was still under investigation Monday afternoon.
