Memorial service slated for late Mercer provost to celebrate his legacy
A memorial service for Mercer University Provost Scott Davis, who died this week from an apparent heart attack, will be on Feb. 19, the school announced Wednesday.
The service will be held at 2 p.m. in the Willingham Hall’s Toney Auditorium on Mercer University’s campus.
“Mercer University suffered a great loss this week with the untimely death of Provost Dr. Scott Davis,” school officials said in an email shared to the campus community Wednesday afternoon. “University faculty, staff, students, alumni, community members and family will gather to remember Dr. Davis and to celebrate the legacy of his dedicated leadership that continues to shape Mercer University.”
Macon-Bibb Coroner Leon Jones told The Telegraph that Davis was found dead Monday morning of natural causes. Jones said it appears Davis died Sunday.
Davis began working at Mercer in 1991 as an assistant professor of chemistry. Over the years, he also served as associate professor, chairman of the chemistry department, associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts and associate executive vice president, according to The Telegraph archives.
