A man died Saturday after a driver lost control and crashed into a truck parked in a highway emergency lane in Macon, according to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were dispatched after a 911 call reported a traffic accident around 2 a.m. on Interstate 16 West just east of Exit 6, Ocmulgee East Boulevard.

Deputies responded and found a man unresponsive inside a Ford F-150 pickup truck, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

A 22-year-old man from Senoia was reportedly heading west on the interstate in a Chevrolet Silverado utility truck, deputies said.

“The driver lost control of his vehicle and left the roadway,” deputies said. “The Chevrolet Silverado struck the Ford F-150 from the rear, which was parked inside the emergency lane.”

The 37-year-old Ford driver, John Patrick Pace of Soperton, was pronounced dead on the scene by Deputy Coroner Ronnie Miley, the sheriff’s office confirmed.

Pace was expected to be taken to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab for an autopsy.

The collision was still under investigation Monday morning, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies urged anyone with information related to the crash to call the sheriff’s office and ask to speak with a fatality investigator at 478-751-7500.
