Fire sparked by space heater affects family of 11, Macon officials say. Red Cross helps

The home of an 11-person family caught fire in Macon Tuesday, according to the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department.

The fire department saw heavy smoke from the one-story brick home in the 3200 block of Seminole Ave at around 3 p.m. Tuesday, according to Capt. Kyle Murray, the lead fire investigator for the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department. The fire seemed to have started in the back room with a space heater and caused moderate damage to the home, Murray said.

The American Red Cross showed up to the scene to provide comfort kits, direct client assistance and recovery planning for the family.

Murray said firefighters ensured that the 11 people in the home, including nine children, were out of the house before extinguishing the fire. Murray ruled the house fire an accident.
