Man found unresponsive in the Bibb County Jail later dies, sheriff’s office says
A man incarcerated at the Bibb County Jail died Monday morning, according to the sheriff’s office.
The sheriff’s office said the inmate, Robert Beck, was being checked by the infirmary staff after 7 a.m., when he was discovered breathing but unresponsive. An ambulance took Beck to Atrium Navicent Health, where he was pronounced dead an hour later, according to Coroner Leon Jones.
Beck was in custody on a charge of aggravated child molestation, the sheriff’s office said.
The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office says it’s investigating his death. The Georgia Bureau of Investigations will perform an autopsy.
Beck’s death is the second man incarcerated at the Bibb County Jail to die this year. Stephen Fossett died in late May following a tasing incident. Fossett’s family recently called on the sheriff’s office to release more details about his death, which they claimed they had not received in the three months since the incident.
Since 2020, nine people held at the Bibb County Jail have died, according to records from the jail.
