Following a fatal crash in Bibb County over the weekend, a family friend of the victim has started a GoFundMe page seeking to raise money for funeral expenses.

The GoFundMe page said the family was “unprepared for the cost of a funeral service.”

Kaitlyn Mackenzie Hermans, of Fort Valley, succumbed to her injuries after the crash Saturday afternoon on Interstate 75 near Exit 153, according to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.

A family friend, Tori Gandy, opened the GoFundMe page to receive donations to “give Kaitlyn the service she deserves, to honor her memory and say our last goodbyes.”

“Any contribution, no matter how small, will help alleviate the financial strain and allow the family to focus on grieving and remembering Kaitlyn,” the fundraiser said.

As of late Monday, the fundraiser has received more than $7,000 in donations. The goal is $15,000.

The crash happened around 2:15 p.m. Saturday, according to the BCSO. Investigators say a Kia Sorento and a Toyota Camry collided, causing Hermans to die at the scene. The man driving the Sorento was taken to Atrium Navicent Health and was deemed to be in stable condition.

Investigators encourage anyone with information about the crash to call 478-751-7500 and ask to speak with a fatality investigator.

Gandy said Hermans’ family didn’t want to speak publicly on the incident.
