Man charged with stealing 62 guns from Macon pawn shop. He’ll plead in federal court
One of the men who stole more than 60 guns from a Macon pawn shop last year was expected to plead guilty Tuesday, according to court documents.
Rontavious Jamal Jackson was indicted Feb. 13 for stealing 62 firearms from Howard’s Pawn and Jewelry, for possessing the stolen guns and for possessing them as a convicted felon, according to the indictment. Court documents indicate that prosecutors and Jackson’s attorneys were finalizing plea negotiations last month, but the agreement details were not known early Tuesday.
Jackson and another man broke into the pawn shop on April 5 last year at 3 a.m. through a large hole in the storage room, according to court documents. The two assailants took guns from the stock shelf and a box behind the counter in the storage room and threw guns into dark garbage bags. The robbery lasted around 20 minutes, according to the incident report, and they left around 3:18 a.m.
Multiple news outlets reported that Jackson was arrested April 12 in Crisp County, 62 miles away from Macon, where 31 of the guns stolen from Howard’s Pawn and Jewelry were discovered in his Cordele home. He was charged by the Crisp County Sheriff’s Office with 31 counts of theft and 32 counts of possessing a weapon as a felon, according to multiple news outlets.
Information on whether the other assailant was arrested or charged was unknown Tuesday. Jackson’s plea hearing was set to happen at the Macon federal courthouse in front of Judge C. Ashley Royal.
