Ahead of Fourth of July celebrations Thursday, the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office is warning people not to fire guns in the air.

“Not only is celebratory gunfire dangerous, but it is also against the law,” the sheriff’s office said.

It is against the law to fire recklessly and 50 yards from a public street or highway, according to their news release. When people fire guns in the air, the bullet comes down at a high rate of speed and it could cause injuries or damage property.

“The Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public to be mindful and remember what goes up must come down and that incidents from celebratory gunfire can easily be avoided,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office also wants to remind everyone to be responsible when setting off fireworks. On Jan. 1, July 3 and July 4, fireworks can be used after 10 a.m. up until midnight. However, no one under the age of 18 should be discharging fireworks and an adult should always be present.

The sheriff’s office also said its deputies will be out during the July 4 holiday weekend “paying special to individuals engaged in reckless conduct with firearms and fireworks as well as those who decide to drink and drive,” ensuring that everyone has a safe and happy Fourth of July celebration.
