One man died in a fiery five-vehicle collision Monday afternoon on Interstate 75 near the Pierce Avenue exit that left five others injured, according to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash happened at about 1:45 p.m. when a box truck, three pickup trucks and an SUV collided on I-75, a news release from the sheriff’s office read.

One driver was “burned beyond recognition” and declared dead at the scene, according to Bibb County coroner Leon Jones. He was later identified as Jeffrey Louis Davis, 66, of Lyons, Georgia, the sheriff’s office said at about 5 p.m.

Paramedics treated three other drivers and took them to the hospital, while two others involved in the crash only sustained minor injuries from the crash.

It was not immediately known how the crash happened. The collision was under further investigation, the sheriff’s office said.
