A man died Monday morning in south Macon after a fire “fully engulfed” a house, according to Bibb County coroner Leon Jones.

The victim was identified as Joseph May, 78, of Macon, Jones said.

The call for the fire came in at about 7:45 a.m. Monday, Jones said. Firemen arrived at 365 Reid St. just off Broadway in south Bibb County to find the home completely covered in flames, according to Jones.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze and found a body after searching inside the house. Deputy coroner Luanne Stone declared May dead just after 8:30 a.m., Jones said.

It was unclear what might have caused the flames or whether anyone else besides May was in the house at the time of the fire.
