Authorities returned to Macon’s Amerson River Park Monday morning to search for a 20-year-old man who disappeared while floating the river.

The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office and Macon-Bibb Fire Department began searching for Raymund Ellison Jr. of Centerville just after 5:30 p.m. Sunday evening. According to the sheriff’s office, Ellison was floating the Ocmulgee with his friends on an inner tube. When they looked back, he was no longer there.

A fire department dive team began to search for Ellison and his next of kin have been notified.

Amerson is a popular destination over the holiday weekend for floating and swimming, and life jackets are required for folks on the river. While shallow in some spots as it flows through Amerson, the river has a strong undercurrent. A 22-year-old Perry man drowned in the Ocmulgee in February.
