UPDATE: Portions of Amerson River Park open as floodwaters recede following heavy storms
March 30 update — Macon-Bibb County has reopened portions of Amerson River Park. From the county:
“Amerson River Park is partially open. Some sections of trail and the boat launch and takeout are still closed due to a layer of slick mud and sand. Those will be cleaned the next several days. Please do not go past any barriers.”
Original — Amerson River Park and the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail are closed until further notice after heavy rainfall led to flooding from the Ocmulgee River, Macon-Bibb County officials said.
A long line of storms moved through Middle Georgia, with a tornado likely touching down in Milledgeville. Gov. Brian Kemp visited Baldwin County Tuesday morning and said the tornado has been rated an EF1, with winds reaching up to 100 mph.
Thousands of people in Macon lost power, and while there were a few downed trees, the most significant issue in Bibb County has been flooding.
Portions of SR 19 and SR 87 were closed overnight due to flooding, according to GDOT. Bibb County firefighters and sheriff’s deputies used boats to transport people trapped in the Timber Pointe apartment complex Monday afternoon.
Amerson River Park will remain closed until after floodwaters recede and crews are able to cleanup and repair the park. Bibb County residents can report storm damage at 478-751-7500 and flooding to the Macon Water Authority at 478-464-5600.
