Man seriously injured when train hits small SUV near Vineville Avenue in north Macon

A man was said to be in critical condition Monday at a Macon hospital after the small SUV he was driving struck a freight train Sunday night at an intersection a block south of Vineville Avenue.

The crash happened shortly before 8 p.m. on Lake Terrace, which ties into Lake Street, a sparsely-traveled side street a couple of blocks north of Brookdale Avenue on the north side of Payne City.

The rail crossing is marked by flashing red signal lights but there are no traffic arms.

Bibb County sheriff’s officials said in a statement that Marquethus Flowers, 29, the driver of a Nissan Rogue, “collided with a moving train.”

Further details were not immediately available.
