Macon earns spot on New York Times travel list as one of the ‘52 Places to Go in 2023’
The Travel section of the New York Times has selected Macon, which this year marks the 200th anniversary of its founding, as one of the “52 Places to Go in 2023.”
Macon was joined on the list by such destinations as Madrid, London, Istanbul, Taipei and Auckland, New Zealand.
The newspaper cited the Bibb County seat’s 1,100-year-old Indigenous mounds as a must-see point of interest, while also noting the Ocmulgee historical site’s status as a soon-to-be-named national park, the first in Georgia.
“Additionally, the city, whose musical roots run deep — Little Richard, the Allman Brothers and Otis Redding all got their start here — is celebrating its 200th anniversary with a new 10,000-seat amphitheater,” the Times reported. “Visitors can check out the Hotel Forty Five, a boutique hotel that opened downtown last year and that was named both for the angle of the street on which it sits and as a nod to musical history.”
On Thursday, Mayor Lester Miller, referring to the city’s inclusion on the list, told The Telegraph: “We have some amazing groups and people on Team Macon-Bibb making our community what it is and making sure the country’s eyes are on us. And we’re not done yet. ... More and more people will come here and enjoy all we have to offer.”
