Perry police chief steps down, awaits Senate confirmation for U.S. Marshal position

Friday marked longtime Perry Police Chief Steve Lynn’s last day leading the department as he prepares for a transition into federal law enforcement.

With decades of law enforcement experience across Middle Georgia, Lynn was nominated by President Joe Biden in May to serve as the region’s U.S. Marshal and is currently waiting for the Senate’s confirmation.

The Perry Police Department, where he served as chief since 2013, is in a state of transition as it searches for the next police chief. The City of Perry posted a job listing for the new position earlier this month.

Alan Everidge, Perry’s current patrol division captain, took over as interim police chief this past weekend.

Lynn is “retiring from local law enforcement” as he prepares for the federal role.

“I picked a future date and gave it to [the City of Perry],” he said. “I gave them six weeks and that came out to be today and the Senate has not confirmed yet … At this point, it’s in their ballpark and we’ll wait until they get to it.”

Lynn said he looks forward to continuing to serve the community as the U.S. Marshal for the Middle District of Georgia, if and when the Senate confirms.

If confirmed, Lynn will replace John Cary Bittick, who has served in the position since 2018.
