Honor Juneteenth with these Macon celebrations, starting Saturday. Here’s more

June 19 is Juneteenth, which honors the end of slavery in the United States and, as of last June, is officially a federal holiday.

In Macon, there are plenty of ways to honor the holiday with family and friends.

June 11:

The Annual Pleasant Hill Neighborhood Reunion

  • When: Noon — 6 p.m.
  • Where: Mattie Hubbard Jones Playground, 2nd Ave. and Pursley St.
  • There will be a cookout, entertainment, tributes and information.

A Douglass Theater Dancical Productions Event, Women Hold Up Half the Sky: A Tribute to the African American Woman

  • When: 7 p.m.
  • Where: Douglass Theater, 355 Martin Luther King Jr Blvd.
  • There will be a Special Tribute to The Seven Magnificent Sisters of Dance. Admission is $20 in advance and $25 at the Door. Tickets can be purchased at the Douglass ticket office at 478-742-2000.

Macon Black History Van Tours

June 16:

Regional Leadership Summit

  • When: 4 p.m.
  • Where: Tubman African American Museum, 310 Cherry St.
  • This summit will explore health/lifestyle practices, public safety and environment, economic equity, black wealth progress, civic issues awareness and youth engagement.

The Annual Real Talk Hip Hop Summit

June 18:

Day One of The 30th Annual Juneteenth Freedom Festival

  • When: Noon — 9:30 p.m.
  • Where: Tattnall Square Park, 1155 College St.
  • The festival will include the Treasures of Kuumba Artists Exhibit, with cultural food vendors, historical displays, Black union soldiers living history presentation and the Magnificent Sisters of Dance.
  • There will also be live music featuring The Butcher Brown Band and other performances.

June 19:

Day Two of the Juneteenth Freedom Festival

When: Noon — 9 p.m.

  • Where: Tattnall Square Park, 1155 College Street
  • There will be a Percussion Master’s Workshop at noon and there will be historical presentations, exhibits, interactive park activities and vendors all day long. There will also be a special Father’s Day Salute and local performances.
