Man from homeless encampment near Ocmulgee River hit by truck, killed on Macon bridge

A 31-year-old man who was walking on the Spring Street bridge over the Ocmulgee River between Interstate 16 and downtown Macon was struck and killed by a pickup truck early Friday, officials said.

The man, Matthew Haggerty, was struck shortly before 5:30 a.m. by a Chevrolet truck that was headed toward downtown, Bibb County coroner Leon Jones said. Haggerty died at the scene.

Other details were not available.

Jones said Haggerty, whose hometown was not immediately known, had been living at a homeless encampment nearby on the downtown side of the river.

No one else was injured in the incident.
