A pedestrian was hit and killed by a passing Volkswagen late Saturday night, according to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.

A 53-year-old man was found unresponsive in the 3100 block of Hillcrest Avenue — south of Vineville Avenue and west of Pio Nono — just after 10 p.m. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, but his identity has not been released as his next of kin has not been notified.

According to the sheriff’s office, the man was hit by a 26-year-old man driving a Volkswagen Jetta east on Hillcrest. The driver’s identity has not been released, and no charges have been announced. No one else was injured in the crash.

Macon has one of the highest per-capita pedestrian fatality rates in Georgia, and recorded 15 pedestrian fatalities last year.
