Macon-Bibb County MLK Day celebration moved inside, will be live-streamed

While weather and COVID-19 have force organizers to cancel several annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebrations, there are still several event scheduled for Sunday and Monday across Middle Georgia.

In observance of MLK Day, Macon-Bibb County offices, The Macon Transit Authority and Middle Georgia schools will be closed.

North Central Health District’s 13 county health departments, offices and other locations will be closed Monday, Jan. 17, for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, according to a NCHD press release. COVID-19 testing will be available by appointment at the following locations:

Bibb County MLK oratorical competition

What: Students will discuss what they believe King would see as today’s most important social justice issues and how to address them.

When: 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 16

Annual MLK breakfast at Tubman Museum

What: Annual breakfast

When: Jan. 17 at 8:30 a.m.

Where: Tubman Museum, 310 Cherry St. Macon, GA 31201

Cost: Breakfast will be in the back parking lot, free to attend.

Macon-Bibb County MLK Day celebration

What: Annual Macon-Bibb County MLK Day celebration. Initially, the remembrance ceremony was scheduled for 10 at at Rosa Parks Square in downtown Macon across from city hall. Due to weather and COVID, that ceremony will be livestreamed in stead.

When: Jan. 17 at 10 a.m.

Cost: Free

MLK Jr. Day of Service 2022

What: Events in Warner Robins celebrating MLK Day, beginning with a march, motorcycle and cyclist ride Monday morning at Warner Robins City Hall (700 Watson Boulevard) and ending at Winning Church (621 Walnut Street). NAACP Houston County Branch members are invited to stay after the march and join local pastors in praying for the city and the U.S.

Cost: Free
