A 76-year-old Macon man who died Monday when his truck crashed have suffered a “medical emergency” before the pickup slammed into a tree, Bibb County sheriff’s officials said.

The wreck happened shortly after 1 p.m. in the Beaver Oaks subdivision south of Thomaston Road near the northern reaches of Lake Tobesofkee.

Sheriff’s officials said in a statement that the man who died, Joel Peed, was at the wheel of a 1998 Ford Ranger pickup when it ran off the road at the intersection of Beaver Oaks Drive and Deer Run Road.

The statement said Peed “may have experienced a medical emergency” that caused him to lose control of the truck.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.
