Off-duty Dublin police officer tased, charged with felony after incident at Macon club
An off-duty Dublin police officer was tased with a stun gun and arrested on felony charges after he allegedly took a cellphone at a downtown Macon nightclub early Saturday.
Gary Jemod Jones, 24, of Dublin, was charged with felony theft by taking and misdemeanor obstruction of a police officer, according to a Bibb County Sheriff’s Office news release. Jones was being held on a $5,350 bond.
The incident happened just before 3 a.m. at The Crazy Bull at 473 Second St.
Here’s what went down, according to the release:
A 31-year-old man had laid his cellphone down at the club. Jones allegedly picked it up and and walked away with it.
Nightclub security guards detained Jones. Upon learning that Jones was an off-duty police officer, the owner of the cellphone offered not to file charges if the device was returned.
Jones denied he took the phone. He was then detained by arriving sheriff’s deputies. The alleged cellphone theft was captured on The Crazy Bull security surveillance system.
As deputies started to escort Jones out of the nightclub office, Jones started to again resist.
“It was not until deputies used a Taser that Jones complied,” the release said. “As deputies were trying to get Jones in the patrol car, he again refused. Deputies had to physically put him in the patrol car.”
Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact the Bibb Sheriff’s Office at 478-751 -7500, or Macon Regional Crimestoppers at 1-877-68CRIME.
