Macon teen homicide victim identified by coroner

A 16-year-old is dead after a shooting Friday night outside a Family Dollar in Macon.

The victim was identified as Devaun Patton of Macon, Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones said. Patton was pronounced dead at 10 p.m. in an operating room of the Medical Center, Navicent Health.

“It was a fight and it escalated into a shooting,” Jones said.

The fight, which happened just before 8:30 p.m., was among several people in the parking lot of the Family Dollar at 2584 Rocky Creek Road, according to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.

“During the physical altercation, an unknown person pulled a gun and fired a shot,” a sheriff’s news release said.

Patton was struck in the abdomen, according to the release.

The shooting is being investigated as a homicide.
