Macon man, 65, dies after falling under moving vehicle in store parking lot

A man was killed when he fell down and was run over in the parking lot of a convenience store and gas station in Macon late Thursday.

The victim was identified as Robert Leo Williams, 65, of Macon, said Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones.

Williams apparently thought his ride was about to pull out of Tom’s Mart at 4381 Mercer University Drive when ran toward the vehicle, tried to open the rear door, stumbled and then fell under the moving vehicle, according to a Bibb County Sheriff’s Office news release.

The vehicle rolled over him and he later died, the release said. That’s based on what witnesses told deputies.

“He was intoxicated, tried to get into a car and got run over,” Jones said.

The Macon-Bibb 911 Center got the call about the incident at 9:26 p.m. Williams was pronounced dead at 10:17 p.m. in the Emergency Room at the Medical Center, Navicent Health, Jones said.

Anyone with information in reference to the incident is urged to contact the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office at 478-751-7500 and ask to speak with a fatality investigator.
