Middle Georgia food distribution to combat ‘food insecurity’ amid coronavirus outbreak

Middle Georgia agencies and churches are teaming up for a massive food distribution Saturday.

About 2,500 boxes are food are expected to be freely given to families in need “to help combat the increased food insecurity issues during the COVID-19 crisis,” according to a news release from the United Way of Central Georgia.

Each of the five distribution sites in Bibb County will have about 500 boxes of food, with each box expected to provide a five-day supply of food, organizers said.

The effort is a partnership among five local churches, the Middle Georgia Community Food Bank and the Central Georgia COVID-19 Response & Recovery Fund.

The food distribution starts at 11 a.m. and ends when all the food is gone. Volunteers, who are mostly from the participating churches, will be practicing social distancing.

Here are the churches and food distribution locations:

▪ Bibb Mount Zion Baptist Church: 3 Bibb Mount Zion Baptist Church, 268 Avondale Mill Road.

▪ World Changers Church: World Changers Church, 630 Wimbish Road.

▪ Community Church of God: Community Church of God, 5555 Bethesda Ave.

▪ The Healing Experience Ministries: Central High School, 2155 Napier Ave.

▪ A Kingdom Life; Shurling Plaza, 1701 Shurling Drive.

In all, the combined food distributed accounts for an estimated 60,000 meals, which is double the amount of food given away at another massive food distribution April 9, organizers said. Between 1,000 and 1,200 vehicles came through the Macon Coliseum parking lot for that drive-thru event.
