2-year-old playing with gun accidentally shoots, kills father in Jones County, officials say

A 2-year-old playing with a gun accidentally shot his father in the back and killed him Thursday night inside their Jones County home, Jones County Sheriff Butch Reece said.

Jason Fowler, 28, was pronounced dead on the scene.. Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched the mobile home off Ga. 49 about 9 p.m.

“The victim was sitting down, was shot in the back,” Reece said. “He calls someone and tells them he’d been shot. When deputies arrived, he’d passed away.”

The gun belonged to Fowler, Reece said. It’s not known how the child got a hold of his father’s gun. The two were alone in the home when the shooting occurred.

The accidental shooting remains under investigation.
