One dead, 3 charged with murder in Macon shooting, officials say
Three people have been arrested and charged with murder in the shooting death of a 17-year-old late Thursday.
Dalton Lee Spires, 22, and Xavier Jamal Lewis, 17, both of Macon, were being held in the Bibb County jail, according to a Bibb County Sheriff’s Office news release. 16-year-old Jieyre Chavis-Moore, who was charged as an adult, was being held in a Regional Youth Detention Center.
Just before 10:30 p.m. Thursday, deputies were dispatched to call of a person shot in the 1600 block of Winston Drive.
Joseph “Joe” Lewis Woolfolk III was pronounced dead in the back of an ambulance, said Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones.
Woolfolk been shot multiple times.
The front lawn of the Winston Drive home was littered with shell casings, and crime scene tape stretched a block and a half down Winston and included part of Greenwich Place, Jones said.
Chavis Moore was initially taken to the Medical Center, Navicient Health, with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg.
He was charged Friday afternoon with murder after sheriff’s investigators learned that he “was involved in” Woolfolk’s death. Spires and Lewis were arrested later Friday.
“Further investigation determined that this incident involved an illegal drug transaction,” the release said.
Spires was also charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana.
“[Woolfolk] was a great basketball player — athlete,” Jones said.
Woolfolk was a student at Windsor Academy for two years and played football and basketball, James Watts, headmaster at Windsor, said in an email. Woolfolk attended Rutland this school year, Watts said.
Woolfolk was enrolled at Rutland off and on, Stephanie Harley, a spokeswoman for the Bibb County School District, said in an email. He was at Rutland for a brief period this year, but he was not on any teams this school year. He was not enrolled in the district at the time of his death.
The shooting marks the 13th homicide in Macon-Bibb County this year, Jones said.
Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office at 478-751-7500, or Macon Regional Crimestoppers at 1-877-68CRIME.
