Wynonna Judd is coming to downtown Macon. Here are the details.
You might not be sure if you’re celebrating March’s First Friday or the first day without predictions of all-day downpours, but either way, there’s more than enough to do, see, hear and eat, drink and enjoy this weekend in the hopefully drier weather.
First off, Wynonna Judd and husband Cactus Moser are performing their acoustic duo show Saturday at the Hargray Capitol Theatre. It’s part of their Wynonna & Cactus: Party of Two Tour. Doors open at 7 p.m. and they play at 8 p.m.
Judd is no stranger to working in a family duo, of course. She gained much notoriety performing with her mom, Naomi Judd, in The Judds. In fact, it’s reported it was during those early touring days in 1989 that the younger Judd first ran into Moser on tour, he himself a well known personality as drummer for Highway 101. Forward through lots of personal history for each until you get to 2009 when they started dating, then 2012 when they married.
Unfortunately, Moser lost a leg in a motorcycle accident soon after but the two pulled together, persevered and have said they grew as a couple.
The two’s acoustic show features a lot of banter along with the music and Judd is famous as a storyteller. After all, she’s a New York Times best-selling author in addition to having won five Grammys. Get to the show and you’ll likely hear family and road stories including the trials, tribulations, pleasures and hilarity of being a couple.
And a Judd.
Those who follow them know there’s likely something always going on in the Judd world, even something like country legend Wynonna Judd’s recent signing with the independent, wildly diverse, punk-Americana label Anti Records. Aside from Party of Two dates, Judd is active with her band Wynonna & The Big Noise and another duo called The Frothy Pitt which features her and Anti Records related artist Cass McCombs.
If you want to experience Judd, Moser and their music and stories up close, you’ve got your chance.
Otherwise, there are many First Friday arts and entertainment/food and drink choices to match all kinds of tastes with a few unique happenings this time around.
There are worthy new shows at most downtown art galleries but at The 567 Center for Renewal you can catch the opening reception for the 7th Annual Bibb County Schools Student Art Exhibition at 6 p.m. It celebrates Youth Art Month and recognizes young artists and gives them a chance to show work in a for-real art gallery.
Cars your thing? There’s a Carvana sponsored show and meet atop the parking garage at 440 Mulberry St. at 6 p.m. with all cars welcome. It’s family-friendly.
Keep in mind that besides the regular concert set at Mercer Music at Capricorn musician David Dingess will play in the music incubator where you can have a free look around at rentable band rooms. A tour of the upstairs Capricorn museum is $7.
Who knows, If Judd and Moser get in town early they may want to have a look themselves.
And with Dr. Seuss’ birthday just past – Theodore Seuss “Ted” Geisel, born March 2, 1904 – don’t be surprised to see Seuss-like characters on the loose at downtown venues and at Dunlop Park/Third Street Park. At the park, officials invite coming at 5:30 p.m. dressed the part to enjoy family friendly music, crafts, birthday cake and a free book giveaway. NewTown Macon will hand out maps showing where to take in other Seuss stuff.
