Pedestrian in serious condition after being struck near Mercer Village

A pedestrian was in serious condition after he was struck Friday evening about a half mile west of Mercer Village.

The accident occurred at about 7:04 p.m. when Jerry Veal, 60, of Macon, walked into the path of an oncoming car in the 2300 block of Montpelier Avenue, the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office said.

According to witness statements, a woman was traveling east on Montpelier in a 2009 Mazda CX9 when Veal, who was walking across Montpelier toward Hicks Alley, walked into the path of the car and was struck.

Veal was taken to Navicent Health Center by ambulance and is listed in serious condition.

The female driver, 19-year-old Amelia Rivers of Newnan, Georgia, was not injured. No charges have been filed against the driver.

The accident is under investigation.
