Severe weather could hit Middle Georgia this weekend. Here’s what you need to know

With a likely rainy weekend on the horizon for Middle Georgia, forecasters are also warning of the possibility of severe weather on Saturday, with temperatures forecast to be in the 70s.

Though chances for damaging storms remain somewhat slight at midweek — about a 15% chance of developing — the National Weather Service on Wednesday issued alerts that strong winds and tornadoes are possible.

Much of the approaching rainy weather system’s severity will depend on the timing of its arrival, Peachtree City-based forecaster Vaughn Smith told The Telegraph.

“Things are looking better as we get closer (to the weekend) for the chances of severe weather to increase,” Smith said.

In a graphic posted on social media, the weather service said the chances for the most severe storms are in areas that span the length of Georgia, mostly west of Interstate 75.

Wet weather and warmer temperatures with highs in the 70s were expected for the midstate, beginning Friday with a 40% chance of showers. The rain chances increase to 70% Saturday night and into Sunday.

Elsewhere, the same storm system is expected to bring heavy rain turning to snow to the Midwest and East coast, according to forecasts.
