GDOT making time constructing I-16 from Spring Street to river crossing
Motorists on Riverside Drive will be crossing over Interstate 75 on a new bridge starting Thursday night.
The old bridge, near Riverside Cemetery, is being replaced as a part of improvements to the interchange at Interstate 16 and I-75, according to a statement from the Georgia Department of Transportation.
The permanent shift of traffic will begin at 9 p.m. Thursday. The intersection at Baxter Avenue and Riverside Drive will be closed for several months as a result. Signs directing drivers to detour will be visible, according to GDOT.
The bridge was dedicated in 2017 as the Wm. Lee Robinson Memorial Bridge. Robinson was a lifelong public servant who graduated from Bibb County schools and earned a degree from Georgia Tech before enlisting in the U.S. Army and earning three Bronze Stars and an Army Commendation Medal for his service in the Vietnam War.
Robinson served four terms as a state senator and was elected to a single term as Mayor of Macon. He was selected to serve as the Circuit Public Defender of the Macon Judicial Circuit and also served as president of the Georgia Association of Circuit Public Defenders, according to the county website.
