State Sen. David Lucas has made significant progress since undergoing emergency heart bypass surgery, a family member says.
The veteran of the state Legislature is recovering at Navicent Health, Medical Center. Lucas went to the emergency room in late September because of chest pains, which led to doctors finding a heart blockage, said Macon-Bibb County Commissioner Elaine Lucas, his wife.
He is expected to be released from the hospital in the next several days and will continue to undergo psychical therapy, she said.
“He just had the best care without exception, very very, excellent care,” Elaine Lucas said. “He’s out of intensive care and starting a little rehab. He’s doing very well.”
Lucas will not be able to drive for the next month but remains in good spirits, she said.
“He’s heard from so many people, and he’s so grateful and blessed to have good friends and people who care about him,” Elaine Lucas said.
Lucas became a state representative in 1975 has been a senator since 2012.
