A former Bainbridge teacher is under investigation after a classroom surveillance video shows her striking a 6-year-old autistic child several times, various media outlets reported.

Avondika Cherry was charged earlier this month with simple battery in the October incident at the Thomas County school system’s Pathways Educational Program, WALB TV News 10 reported.

Cherry resigned from the school system, WCTV TV reported.

A paraprofessional, who was inside the classroom at the time of the incident, resigned pending termination for not reporting what happened, Superintendent George Kornegay, Jr. said.

Kornegay said the matter has been turned over to authorities.

Solicitor-General Benjamin David Harrell said in a news release that additional charges against Cherry will be forthcoming.
