Bibb County says goodbye to longtime educator
Bibb County will be saying goodbye to longtime educator Leontine Louise Fields Espy on Saturday.
Espy died Monday at age 84 after an extended illness.
A funeral service for Espy will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Steward Chapel AME Church, 887 Forsyth St. in Macon. Visitation will be held from 7-8 p.m. Friday at Jones Brothers Memorial Chapel, 3035 Millerfield Road.
Espy was a graduate of Fisk University and Atlanta University. She started her career as a second-grade teacher in the early 1950s, and she held three assistant principal positions before becoming principal of Central High School in 1987. At Central, she helped forge the International Baccalaureate program, which provides rigorous coursework for students. She retired as a Bibb County assistant superintendent in 1996.
Espy was married to the late George Espy Jr., who was an educator and musician. She is survived by two sons, George Fadil Muhammad and Gregory Warren Espy, and their wives; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
