Bridge construction to shut down Macon road

A detour will be needed for people attempting to drive on Log Cabin Drive this weekend.

Log Cabin, between Mercer University Drive and Napier Avenue, will be shut down Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The west Macon road will be closed to through traffic as construction starts on a pedestrian bridge over Rocky Creek, according to a news release.

Drivers should instead use Edna Place as a detour. People who live along Log Cabin will be able to get to their homes; however, the vehicular bridge and a section of road will remain off limits Saturday.

The vehicular bridge will reopen Saturday night, but the pedestrian bridge will not be open to walkers until it’s “deemed to be safe,” the release said.

The ongoing $1.6 million Log Cabin Drive project improvements are being paid for with the special purpose local option sales tax.

“This is huge step toward having a safe and walkable road for the residents of the Bellevue neighborhood,” Macon-Bibb County Commissioner Al Tillman said in the release. “For years, we’ve seen people walking along here in the grass and close to the road, and this will help people here get through the area, to the nearby shops and restaurants, and to the new Filmore Thomas Park, which opens next month.”
