Effort underway to name fire station after Lonzy Edwards
Former Bibb County Commissioner Lonzy Edwards may have a building named in his honor.
Macon-Bibb County Commissioner Elaine Lucas said an effort is underway, led by residents, to name the east Bibb fire station now under construction after him. Edwards passed away in April at age 67, days after suspending his mayoral bid for health reasons.
The Jeffersonville Road fire station was approved to have the name of Macon-Bibb County Commissoner Bert Bivins. Instead, it may work out better to swap the stations’ names and have the future Napier Avenue fire station given Bivins’ name, Lucas said during this week’s commission meeting.
From 2007-2013, Edwards was commissioner of the district where the Jeffersonville fire station is being built. The attorney also worked and was pastor at Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church in east Bibb.
