Vaccinated college senior dies of COVID in Georgia. ‘Doesn’t make sense’
Friends and family are mourning the death of a 21-year-old vaccinated University of Georgia senior who died of COVID-19.
Shawn Kuhn died Monday after battling COVID-19-based pneumonia for nearly six weeks, The Atlanta-Journal Constitution reported.
His older sister Sharla Brook Kuhn said that Shawn had been fully vaccinated, according to the university’s newspaper The Red & Black.
Shawn Kuhn was on the University of Georgia’s dean list and “working towards a Bachelor Degree in exercise and sports science,” according to his obituary. He also was a certified personal trainer at the Ramsey Student Center on campus and worked at a Chick-fil-A in Athens.
“It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our team leader Shawn,” the restaurant said on Facebook. “He was an extraordinary young man and a beloved team leader at our store.”
Kuhn’s parents are still in shock that their son is gone.
“You were everything your mother and I could have ever asked for and so much more,” his dad, Timothy Kuhn, said on Facebook. “I just can’t believe you are gone. It just doesn’t make sense ... just know that your mother and I love you more than you could ever imagine and we could not be any more proud of the man you grew to be.”
Friends remember Kuhn as a kind and uplifting person.
“Empathetic, respected, and charismatic, ‘‘ former university classmate Pranav Kandikuppa told The Red & Black. “These three words describe a friend who was always smiling, laughing and caring and I hope we remember him just as that. We miss you, Shawn.”
The Georgia Department of Public Health reports 63,298 post-vaccination COVID-19 infections and 742 post-vaccination deaths as of Oct. 12.
Nearly 66% of the U.S. population is vaccinated against COVID-19, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, with almost 77% of those ages 12 and up — who are eligible to receive the Pfizer vaccine — fully vaccinated as of Oct. 15.
