Where’s my money? 35 million still waiting on stimulus checks, feds say
An estimated 30 million to 35 million people in the United States are still waiting on federal coronavirus relief payments, CBS News reports.
The payments of $1,200 per person or $2,400 per couple, plus money for each minor child, have been going out to those who qualify since April, CNBC reported.
“The Trump Administration has delivered 159 million economic impact payments worth more than $267 billion to Americans in record time,” Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said in a statement last week, according to the network.
But some people, like Mark Perry of California, are still waiting, KGTV reported.
“I know of two other people in the exact same position I am,” Perry said, according to the station. “I’m frustrated mostly with the IRS website platform, which seems broken to me.”
A report by the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee breaks down some of the reasons that millions of Americans still haven’t received checks, MarketWatch reports.
The panel found 13 million to 18 million people don’t earn enough each year to qualify for the relief payments, the report says.
Of those who do qualify, many do not file tax returns for a variety of reasons, leaving the Internal Revenue Service with no way to find them to deliver their stimulus payments.
“The IRS also has an estimated 10 million pieces of mail to open and process, including 4.7 million tax returns,” the report says. “Some of these returns may be from first-time filers who would qualify for economic impact payments.”
The IRS does offer a non-filers tool on its site, allowing people who don’t file tax returns to register their information with the agency. That tool has an Oct. 15 deadline.
Also, the IRS estimated it could take up to 20 weeks to send out all the payments, with money for those with the lowest incomes going out first, CNET reports, so people with higher incomes may just be at the end of the line.
Other possible reasons include past-due child support, which can be deducted from your payment, incorrect banking information or being targeted by scammers, according to the publication.
