Houston County schools are providing Chromebooks for students. Here’s how to pick up one for your child.
If you are a student in the Houston County School District without a device to participate in digital learning then the district will be providing Chromebook pickups this week.
For K-5, pickups will be on Monday or Tuesday of this week. Middle and high school students have already received Chromebooks but if they missed the initial school pickup then they can also get one on Monday or Tuesday.
Starting on Monday, the district will begin teaching their students online with Google Classroom. Students are able to connect to the platform through their cell phone, iPod, iPad, Xbox, Playstation, desktops and Macs.
Only one Chromebook is allowed per family for those currently without a device to connect to the internet. Any K-12 family without a device is eligible for the Chromebooks.
School families in the Houston County School District without a device to participate in digital learning are being offered the opportunity to checkout a Chromebook. Families with K-5 elementary children may pick up a Chromebook this Monday or Tuesday, April 6 or 7.
High school and middle school students have already received Chromebooks. Any family with secondary students who missed their school’s pickup day may also get a device on April 6 or 7.
As of April 6, district teachers will begin teaching their students online using Google Classroom, a digital learning platform. To interact with their teachers for instruction, assignments and tests, students may use any device that can access the internet. For example, they may connect to Google Classroom with a cell phone, iPod, iPad, Xbox, PlayStation, desktops, and Mac computers.
Any K-12 family without a device that connects to the internet may checkout a Chromebook to use for school during the closure. Due to a limited supply, only one Chromebook is allowed per family for those without a device to connect to the internet.
The Chromebooks have security filters that disable video gaming and streaming. But students will be able to access Google Classroom and other learning sites.
“Our goal is to ensure that every one of our families has access to technology and the internet to participate in digital learning. Deputy Superintendent Cindy Flesher said in a release. “We are hopeful that all of our K-12 students will participate in the digital classrooms with their teachers and classmates.”
For safe social distancing, families drive through the bus lane and remain in their car at one of these four locations at four different times.
