Macon-based Sheridan Construction names new president, CEO

Macon-based Sheridan Construction Co. has named Christy Kovac as the company's president and Ronny Williams as its chief executive officer.

"Christy Kovac is the first woman to lead a major construction company in Middle Georgia," Chairman Chris Sheridan said. His father founded the company in 1947.

"It is a big transition, and she will do a great job. She has climbed her way to the top of a traditionally male-dominated industry."

Kovac, 45, began her career with Sheridan as an estimator more than a decade ago, and she has more than 20 years of experience in the construction industry. The Macon native was promoted to vice president of preconstruction at Sheridan in 2011 and was named executive vice president in 2014, according to a release.

About three years ago Sheridan -- who was president and CEO of the company -- named Williams as president and Sheridan remained CEO. With the recent changes, he became chairman.

"Ronny has been running the day-to-day operations for several years now, and he and Christy have been such a great team," Sheridan said. "Ronny has been the unsung hero in our company for years. ... Ronny and I have been together for 34 years, and we've never, ever had a serious argument."

As president, Kovac will lead the company's daily operations, and Williams will oversee new business opportunities and the strategic vision of the company.

The transition at the company has been part of Sheridan's plan for several years.

Sheridan told The Telegraph in 2004 that he had put a plan in place to eventually transfer ownership of the company to employees.

"That was a two-step process, and we did the first part in 2006 when we transferred 49 percent of the stock to the employees," he said Wednesday.

Then the remainder of the stock was transferred in 2015.

"I've just got total and complete confidence in Ronny and Christy," Sheridan said. "And the confidence that I have in them is their desire to continue operating with the same set of values that Dad started the company with."
