Rezoning request approved for a 100-unit apartment complex off Thomaston Road in Macon

Macon zoning officials approved a rezoning request Monday that would allow a 100-unit apartment development for seniors near Thomaston Road.

The Macon-Bibb County Planning & Zoning Commission unanimously agreed to rezone about 12 acres at 4193 Cavalier Drive, just off Thomaston Road near Interstate 475, from an industrial and general commercial district to a multifamily residential district.

DHB Development Inc. of Valdosta plans to build the development for senior housing, which would include four two- and three-story buildings. Also, it would include a community center, playground, gazebo, covered pavilion and 203 parking spaces.

Houston Brown, representing DHB Development, said the company has built several similar apartment complexes, and it manages most of the developments it owns.

"We just completed one in Young Harris ... and about to start one in Blairsville," Brown said as he showed photos of some apartments the company had built.

The commission also approved a conditional-use permit for the same project.

In another matter, the commission approved conditional-use permits for three Bojangles fast-food restaurants. They would be at 788-794/808 Gray Highway, 4190 Pio Nono Ave. and 2772 Riverside Drive.

Existing buildings on the Gray Highway and Pio Nono Avenue site would be demolished. The Riverside Drive property is a vacant lot adjacent to Expert Tire. A motel used be on the site before it was demolished several years ago.

Primex Properties LLC would build a 3,808-square-foot building on each site, and each one would employ 35 to 45 workers.
