John Brewer, owner of Med Tech USA LLC, 355 Cotton Ave., Suite 3, 238-1499.

How long have you been in business?: This business was derived from his previous business, V-1 Solutions, which was a computer support company.

"We had a number of clients who were medical offices, and during that time the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (also known as HIPAA) came about and basically created a bunch of requirements for medical offices to follow in order to ensure patient privacy. We discovered there was very little good information out there, and what was out there I found to be poorly done."

So the company created products designed to help medical offices be HIPAA compliant. And as that side of the business grew, it changed to being a HIPAA compliance business about 2010.

What do you like best about your job?: "Well, I think by nature I'm just a problem solver. ... Along with the computer background I understand how (government regulations) intertwine with medical practices. ... I was in the Air Force for 20 years and I dealt daily with rules and regulations of the government."

What is your specialty?: "Our specialty is helping medical practices be HIPAA compliant the easiest way possible."

The company will do security risk assessments, HIPAA training and help a company implement the required policies and procedures. It works with private practices and hospitals.

"A large portion of HIPAA deals with computer security, and because we have that background of computer knowledge it really fit well into what we were doing."

What are your future plans?: "There is a growth process in place where some of our online products are basically creating more of a cloud-based, if you will, interface, where ... all the policies and procedures will be on a cloud-based portal. If they have multiple locations, ... each employee would have a location where they can log in and view the policies and procedures. ... Our growth in that regard is to improve the way things are done within the medical practice and the products we have to help them be compliant. Our expectation is that we would grow our client base along the way."
