Macon's zoning board to consider rezoning for landscape business

A landscape contractor plans to put his business on Hawkinsville Road if his application to rezone the property is approved.

Robert "Greg" Israel Jr., owner of U.S. Lawns Macon-Bibb, has filed an application with the Macon-Bibb County Planning & Zoning Commission to rezone 6043 Hawkinsville Road from a single-family residential district to a wholesale and light industrial district. U.S. Lawns is a franchise business based in Orlando, Florida.

The matter is expected to be discussed during Monday's commission meeting.

Israel plans to use an existing house on the 1.3-acre site for a business office, and an existing garage will be used to store equipment for the landscaping business, according to the commission's staff report.

"It is the intention of the business to maintain the property's rural surroundings," the report stated. "The green areas around the structures on the property will be maintained in order to train employees."

The report also states the proposed development is "consistent with the future land use plan. ... The development will not have a significant impact on the adjacent area and is appropriate for the location."

There has been an increase in commercial development in the area "which will probably continue in the future," the report said.

The meeting begins at 1:30 p.m. in the 10th floor conference room, Willie C. Hill Government Center Annex, 682 Cherry St.
